Volunteers in Medicine
The Coachella Valley Volunteers in Medicine (CVVIM) clinic, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, began providing free medical and dental services to low-income, underserved residents of the Coachella Valley in late 2010. It is the only 100% free clinic in the valley.
Staffed almost exclusively by volunteer providers, patients are never charged for any services received at the clinic. Volunteer providers include physicians, dentists, nurses, and other allied healthcare personnel. Clerical and administrative volunteers also play an important role at the clinic. Over 245 volunteers logged almost 13,000 hours in 2013. The value of cumulative donated hours to date is quickly approaching one million dollars. The clinic receives no federal or state governmental funding and is supported exclusively by grants and donations. A new free-standing, purpose-built clinic constructed by the County of Riverside was completed in December 2012 and is located on Avenue 48 in Indio near the corner of Jackson Street.
The clinic is currently delivering over 6500 patient visits per year, and has become a vital resource to thousands of local residents and families. Many of these patients are benefiting from learning to manage chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, vastly improving their health and ability to be productive citizens. The clinic is open Monday through Friday 8 to 5, and Saturdays from 8 to 12. Appointments are required.
